Context
A new standardized type of bullion - the Novgorod ruble - appeared at the beginning of the 13th century. The first written mention of the term 'Ruble' refers to the 1280s. Several types of the Novogorodsk ruble are known according to their length: - 174-195mm (195-207 grams) - 1201-1300; - 140-170mm (188-192 grams) - 1290-1400; - 107-140mm (~184 grams) - 1390-1450. The division of the ruble into halves gave rise to the term 'Poltina'. It became widespread later, mainly in the Moscow and Tver principalities.
